Khaled Hosseini has authored two New York Times best-selling novels, The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns and received the Borders Original Voices Award in 2003. Most readers find Hosseini's books to be emotionally intense, while others hold a contrary view.

Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 1965, Hosseini's family were granted political asylum in the United States following the invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet army. Hosseini graduated from the University of California, San Diego medical school and practiced medicine until a year and a half after the release of The Kite Runner.
