George R.R. Martin was born September 20, 1948 in Bayonne, New Jersey. He began writing very young, selling monster stories to other neighborhood children for pennies, dramatic readings included. As a youth, Martin became an avid reader and collector of comic books. Fantastic Four 20 (Nov 1963) features a letter to the editor he wrote while in high school. He credits the attention he received from this letter, as well as his following interest in fanzines, with his interest in becoming a writer.
His professional career as a science-fiction and fantasy writer has now spanned several decades, and has earned a legion of fans, the respect of the press, and many awards, including Nebulas and Hugos. Martin's present home is Santa Fe, New Mexico.
This fall Martin is releasing a collection of short-stories, that include "the very best of George R.R. Martin’s early works". The two volume set consists of Dreamsongs: Volume I and Dreamsongs: Volume II. Martin himself is encouraging fans to enter for a chance to win a signed Advanced Reading Copy of the books at Pat's Fantasy Hotlist.
